The 18-Month Transition: How the Industry Prepared for 12 August 2026

Between the entry into force in February 2025 and the general application date of 12 August 2026, the European packaging industry went through one of the most intensive transformation periods in its history. Supply chains were remapped, material formulations were re-engineered, and certification became a strategic asset.

During this window, the market began to separate suppliers into two groups: those treating compliance as paperwork, and those treating it as product design. Recyclability had to be designed in from the start. Substances of concern, including PFAS, had to be phased out of food contact materials. Labelling had to anticipate the harmonised EU symbols that consumers will increasingly see on every package.

From a public-health standpoint, this transition was a quiet upgrade for everyone who eats. Every container reformulated during this period means fewer persistent chemicals in contact with food, and every package redesigned for recyclability means less material ending up in landfills, rivers and oceans.

For buyers, the transition period was the moment to audit their supply base. Importers who had already aligned their factories, their materials and their documentation with the regulation could offer something rare in 2026: certainty. That is exactly the position we chose to build.
