12 August 2026: PPWR Is Now in Force — What It Means for Your Business

Today, 12 August 2026, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation generally applies across the European Union. The transition is over: every packaging item placed on the EU market must now live up to the regulation's requirements — on recyclability, on substances of concern, on labelling, and on waste prevention.

Concretely, this means food-service operators can no longer distribute certain single-use items; take-away businesses must accept customers' own containers at no extra cost; and food contact packaging must respect the new limits on substances of concern, including PFAS. These are not distant goals — they are obligations in force as of today.

Why does this matter for human health? Because every one of these rules reduces the flow of persistent chemicals and microplastics toward our food, our water and our bodies. Why does it matter for the environment? Because packaging designed for circularity is packaging that no longer ends up as the half of marine litter that comes from packaging.

For European buyers, the practical question is simple: is your supplier actually PPWR-ready? Certification documents, material specifications and production processes all need to match the regulation.
